Mayor's Fun Run

The Mayor’s Races have been held in Carmarthen every year since 1982 on Easter weekend - now held on May Day Bank Holiday Monday. They were established by the Mayor of Carmarthen Town, Councillor Peter Hughes Griffiths, in partnership with Dr D. Hedydd Davies, the international athlete who has represented his country many times. Since 2007 the event has been organised by tri-athlete Noelwyn Daniel on a voluntary basis.

The races in Carmarthen have attracted the very best athletes in Wales, and have encouraged the county's children to take up athletics. Twenty five Welsh road race championships were held in conjunction with the annual Carmarthen Mayor’s Road Race. Over the period of 25 years, the race has been over various distances, from a Full Marathon, Half Marathon to 10km, before settling on its current 5km format for seniors, plus special races for children.

One of the main aims of the Fun Run is to raise money for local good causes. Runners are sponsored and Dr Davies and his supporters raised over £120,000 for local hospitals. The fund-raising continues under Mr Noelwyn Daniel and his team.

Trophies are presented to winners at the end of the races and all runners receive medals.

Over the years, the races have received support and co-operation from Carmarthenshire County Council, Carmarthen Town Council and many local organisations. The races have become an important event in the town and are now continued under the direction of the tri-athlete, Mr Noelwyn Daniel, and Carmarthen Town Council.
